We understand that as a guest or a new member there is a lot of information to digest, so we have compiled these FAQs to help answer any questions you may have. If you have further questions, please reach out to us, using our Contact page.
Where are club meetings held?
Clubs meetings are held in a variety of locations, ranging from corporations to colleges to restaurants to local community centers. Toastmasters' global network is made of 14,650 clubs in 126 countries. The Essex Toastmasters club is an open community club that meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 7:15pm - 8:45pm. Please note that these meetings do not always fall on every other Thursday. Also, occasionally, modifications will be made to meeting locations and dates, especially around the holidays in November and December. Do I need to contact a club before attending?
Even through we rarely cancel or change a meeting, we recommend you contact our club prior to a meeting to confirm any time changes and meeting details. You can also check the Club Calendar.
Am I required to speak at a club meeting?
No. You are not obligated to speak when visiting a club. Typically, we ask each guest to stand, state their name, and say what interested them about Toastmasters, but if you simply wish to observe just let one of our club officers know before the start of the meeting.
Can I visit more than one club?
Yes. We encourage you to visit multiple clubs to find the one that best fits your needs.
Is there a fee to attend a club meeting?
There are no fees to attend a meeting as a guest. When you want to begin giving speeches, you will need to become a member. Please click here to learn more about the membership fee.
How long are club meetings?
Our meetings are typically 1.5 hours, starting at 7:00pm and ending at 8:30pm.
Do I need to bring anything to a club meeting?
No. You are not required to bring anything to a meeting.
Is there a leader or instructor?
There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. The club will have elected club officers present and a Toastmaster who facilitates the meeting.

Can anyone become a member?
As long as you are at least 18 years of age, you can join Toastmasters. Essex Toastmasters is an open, community club with a diverse and multi-generational member base. You do not have to be a citizen of Bloomfield, NJ to join.
How do I become a member?
Our VP of Membership is available to help you with this process. All you have to do is fill out a membership application and pay the dues (see following question for information on dues). Once the application has been processed, you will receive your Toastmasters welcome letter and can begin giving speeches. If you would like a mentor to help guide you through the manuals, please let one of the club officers know and we will organize this for you.
How much does it cost to become a member?
Members pay international dues of $45 every six months (September and February) plus a $6 club fee. A new member also pays a one-time $20 joining fee. If you join in a different month, the international dues will be prorated. The new member joining fee and club fee remains the same.
